Passing the baton of leadership at APC

Passing the baton of leadership at APC

It is with great pleasure that I am announcing the leadership succession plans at the Asia Philanthropy Circle (APC).

APC’s new CEO is Mafruza Khan. She just started today as CEO (Designate), and will officially take over from me on 12 July 2021. At the same time, I will be Chairman, while Stanley, my co-conspirator, remains as a board member.

Mafruza flew in from New York City a week ago, and is currently serving her Stay Home Notice (quarantine). She is Bangladeshi and American, and has had more than 20 years of experience in the social and philanthropy sector. Most recently, she was the first Country Director in Bangladesh of Porticus, and was the first person of colour on the Porticus Global Leadership Team.

Previous to that, she served both as a Strategic Consultant and a Philanthropy Advisor (to non-profits, foundations and intermediaries), and served at the Environmental Grantmakers Association where she led programmes in research, member engagement and convening. In her early years, her work centred on research on sustainable urban development, labour rights and investor responsibility.

Mafruza has a Bachelor’s Degree (1st Class Honours) and a Master’s Degree in Economics from Dhaka University, and received a World Bank Graduate Scholarship to pursue a Master’s in City and Regional Planning from UC Berkeley.

Mafruza is taking over at a time where APC is entering a new phase of growth. I, together with Stanley, gave birth to APC, a “for philanthropists by philanthropists” platform for Asia, in July 2015. The mission then, as is now, is to be forward-thinking and innovative body to continuously identify, recruit and harness the collective intelligence and efforts of Asian philanthropists for collaborative and catalytic action in Asia.

We have come a long way from the start. We are now close to 50 members. We have a strong team in place, our programming is well-received, and are consistently able to catalyse new action.

But there is still much to do. Hence, it is timely for leadership renewal to bring fresh ideas and bolstered energy. Stanley and I are still very much committed to APC’s success. I will be an active chair, continuing to drive select projects as an APC member, and be a Senior Advisor during this transition period. Please give her your support!

Warm regards,

Laurence Lien
